Hazelnut-Topped Blueberry Almond Tarts & Bourbon Browned-Butter Cookies

It’s February. Love is in the frigid air…

Cupid is at the target range – his arrows sharpened and polished – the bow is tautly strung. Everything is ready. Even good ol’Saint Valentine is donning freshly laundered robes for the festivities.

It’s that time of year and no matter what team you’re on (single or coupled off) no matter where you live and no matter what your age, you are surrounded by chocolate wrapped in shades of red and pink, bushels of roses, and, if you happen to live in Zurich, fruit which appears to have been tattooed with hearts. Seriously…. look at these apples…. the Swiss…


And this year, the big day is a Saturday – it is unavoidable.

I know.


But I must admit, I love it. I love all of it. I love the cards, the flowers, even the terrible balloons. I love the heart shaped chocolates, the stuffed animals, and the painted cookies. I love the corny advertisements, the themed menus… and above all, I love the love stories.

Winter weekends in Switzerland lend themselves to double features under the covers….The Vow, Under the Tuscan Sun, French Kiss, Sweet Home Alabama, The Holiday, When Harry Met Sally, Before Sunrise … I even picked up The Notebook – I’ve been busy…
And with regards to presents, well I think the best ones come from your oven, made with your heart and your hands. Nestled into lemon scented shells, filled with fresh berries and ground nuts, puffed and toasted, and crowned with a sprinkle of hazelnuts, these are perfect for any Valentine…

…or just for you and your very lucky mouth 😉 And if were going in that direction, let’s talk about browned butter and bourbon cookies…. lots of bourbon – because life is too short – just pour it on in…
